An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn is the sixth book in the Veronica Speedwell historical mystery series. And I must say, this historical mystery definitely shows Veronica and Stoker at their absolute best. Let’s get into it.
An Unexpected Peril
Veronica Speedwell and Revelstoke Templeton-Vane are collaborators in the preparation of Lord Rosemorann’s collection that will one day become a museum. They are also lovers and sometimes sleuths and best of all, they are proficient dialogue duelers.
Veronica and Stoker are asked to assist in the building of an exhibit for the late Alice Baker-Greene, an alpinist who dies tragically in a fall from the Tuefelstreppe, a revered mountain in the Alpenwald, a small country situated between Germany and France. The exhibit is to be showcased at the Hippolyta Club, where Veronica and Baker-Greene were members.
However, it soon becomes clear that Baker-Greene was murdered when Stoker finds the rope she used that day had been cut.
Veronica and Stoker
I’ve spoken before on this book blog of my love for Veronica and Stoker, and I’ve also mentioned my love for character-driven fiction. I must say with all honesty I do believe An Unexpected Peril is Veronica and Stoker’s best pairing yet when it comes to delectable character interaction.
The dialogue is witty, crisp, and cutting, and the two characters really push each other in this mysterious adventure. In the last book, we saw them finally succumb to their love for one another, but their relationship grew so much deeper in this book. It actually took my breath away at times.
Like with any drug, you’re reaction to it lessens over time, and it takes more to get a rise out of you. The same can be said of reading, and as a writer and avid reader, some stories no longer grab me by the throat as they may have once done.
Veronica and Stoker never fail to rip my heart out and hand it to me.
The Peril of Love
I cannot pinpoint why it is that I am so invested in Veronica and Stoker, but I would lay some of the blame at the realness of their problems. These are not caricatures for a historical mystery. They are lifelike and substantial, and this makes them so utterly relatable.
Veronica’s personal stakes are raised to a near breaking point in this unexpected peril. For readers of the series, you will know that Veronica is the semi-legitimate daughter of the Prince of Wales. In this historical mystery, she finds herself in Windsor Castle. I will say no more because I don’t do spoilers. But wink, wink, read this book!
Veronica and Stoker’s love is brought to the brink in this adventure. I am still left reeling over the developments. What will it mean for the future of this dynamic duo? I don’t know, but as soon as I can, I will pre-order the next book.
An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn premiered on the USA Today Bestseller List. Way to go, Ms. Raybourn! For me, it’s an instant favorite with lots of sighing, laughter, and intrigue. If you want to start binging a delectable series, you cannot go wrong with the intrepid Veronica Speedwell.
