The Dreaded Second Book
Second books are tricky little devils. If your first book is a success, there is so much pressure on the author to deliver another great read. And I mean PRESSURE.
Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead astounded me. We got Finlay, Vero, Julian, and Steven back again in a completely new and refreshing way. Cosimano did not rely on old habits that worked in the first book. She took these characters and relationships and moved them forward.
We saw more of Vero and her backstory, and the relationship between Finlay and Steven was deliciously muddied and tightened. It was everything we loved about the first book but taken to the next level.
The Mob
If you haven’t read the first Finlay novel, Finlay has gotten herself into a serious case of mistaken identity. Folks seem to think she’s a killer for hire. Specifically she gets herself tangled up with the Russian mob.
Once you’re tangled up with the mob, that should be it. But it’s not. Finlay’s precarious existence on the periphery of organized crime teeters on the brink of absolute disaster. The plot was never stale, and yet Finlay always stayed true to character no matter the outrageous obstacles she faced.
The Humor
Cosimano kills it at humor. These mystery books are fresh and funny, and right now, we could all use a good laugh.
